The Whole Truth About Grain…

Whole grains are nutritionally superior to refined grains.  They are rich in fiber, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins.  When whole grains are refined. As much as half their nutritional value is lost.

Of special significance is the fact that whole grains contain as much as four times the daily fiber than their refined counterparts.  Increasing fiber in the diet has been shown to reduce the incidence of heart disease, obesity and some forms of cancer and diabetes.

A look at the label will help you identify some confusion.  A whole grain should be listed first on the label.  Next look at the fiber content; a bread that contains at least 2 grams per slice is a healthy option.  Stay away from anything that is made from refined flour!  My bread of choice is the California Style Protein Bread from Trader Joe’s.
